What happens if your favicon is smaller than 48×48?
If your favicon is smaller than 48×48 pixels (e.g. 16×16 or 32×32), Google may not use it in search results. In that case, Google typically either shows a generic/default icon (e.g. a globe) next to your site title, or no favicon at all. Your listing can look less recognizable and less trustworthy than competitors with a valid favicon.
Browsers may still display your small favicon in tabs and bookmarks, but for Google Search you need at least 48×48. Resize your image to 48×48 or larger (square) and declare it in your HTML so Google can pick it up.
